Because the atoms have a negative s-wave scattering length, a Bose condensate of 7Li becomes mechanically unstable when the number of condensate atoms approaches a maximum value. We calculate the dynamics of the collapse that occurs when the unstable point is reached. In addition, we use the quantum Boltzmann equation to investigate the nonequilibrium kinetics of the atomic distribution during and after evaporative cooling. The condensate is found to undergo many cycles of growth and collapse before a stationary state is reached. [S0031-9007(98)05489-1]

Tunnelling induced collapse of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential

The stability of a low temperature Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive interactions in one and three dimensional double-well potentials is discussed. In particular, the tunnelling dynamics of a condensate under the influence of a timedependent potential gradient is investigated. The condensate is shown to collapse at a critical potential gradient which corresponds to a critical number of a...

Stability and collapse of a coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

The dynamics of a coupled Bose-Einstein condensate involving trapped atoms in two quantum states is studied using the time-dependent GrossPitaevskii equation including an interaction which can transform atoms from one state to the other. We find interesting oscillation of the number of atoms in each of the states. For all repulsive interactions, stable condensates are formed. When some of the a...

Controlled collapse of a Bose-Einstein condensate.

The point of instability of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) due to attractive interactions was studied. Stable 85Rb BECs were created and then caused to collapse by slowly changing the atom-atom interaction from repulsive to attractive using a Feshbach resonance. At a critical value, an abrupt transition was observed in which atoms were ejected from the condensate. By measuring the onset of th...

Coupled Bose-Einstein condensate: Collapse for attractive interaction

We study the collapse in a coupled Bose-Einstein condensate of two types of bosons 1 and 2 under the action of a trap using the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The system may undergo collapse when one, two, or three of the scattering lengths ai j for scattering of boson i with j, i , j51,2, are negative representing an attractive interaction. Depending on the parameters of the problem...

Amplification of local instabilities in a Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive interactions.

We study the collapse of large homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensates due to intrinsic attractive interactions. We observe the amplification of a local instability by seeding a momentum state p and suddenly switching the scattering length negative via a Feshbach resonance. We also observe the appearance of atoms in the conjugate momentum state as required by momentum conservation. For large cond...
